Although Ohio law
does not require you to purchase car insurance,
it does require you to have a guaranteed way to pay for
injuries or damage resulting from your own negligent
driving.
At least 20
percent of Ohio drivers do not carry car insurance or
proof of financial obligation at any given time,
breaking this state-mandated law called "proof of
financial responsibility." As most Ohio drivers do not
have unlimited financial resources, there is only one
real choice-to purchase liability insurance.
Driving without
Ohio car insurance or proof of financial responsibility
can bring stiff penalties. Your Ohio driver's license
can be suspended, your car impounded, your driving
privileges revoked and/or court costs prescribed.
"How much
car insurance should I buy?"
Ohio law requires
you to carry the following minimum amounts of
liability insurance:
-
Bodily
injury coverage: $12,500 per person;
$25,000 per accident
-
Property damage coverage: $7,500 per
accident
Bodily injury
liability pays for injury or death to others when you
are at fault in an accident. It is always a good idea to
consider buying higher limits of Ohio liability
insurance than those mandated by state law because state
minimums may not be sufficient to cover the complete
value of your car, provide adequate finances for medical
bills incurred as the result of an accident, or protect
you fully from lawsuits.
